Probes for Coating Thickness Measurement
The LEPTOSKOP 2042 works with external, exchangeable probes. These are designed for Fe- (Magnetic Method according to DIN EN ISO 2178) and NFe-base materials (Eddy Current Method according to DIN EN ISO 2360). The wide selection allows for versatile use of the Coating Thickness Gauge even when measuring on complex geometries and under difficult testing conditions. Coating thicknesses up to 20 mm are possible.
Magnetic Method according to DIN EN ISO 2178
For all non-magnetic coatings (e.g. paint, lacquer, powder lacquer, enamel, plastics, zinc, chromium, copper) on (ferro)-magnetic substrate (Fe) (e.g. iron and steel).
This method utilises the magnetic properties of the base material. A coil generates a magnetic field, which is amplified by the ferromagnetic substrate. To determine the coating thickness, a sensor measures the magnetic interaction, which becomes weaker the thicker the non-magnetic coating is.
Eddy Current Method according to DIN EN ISO 2360
For all non-conductive coatings (e.g. lacquer, paint, powder lacquer, anodized surface, plastics) on (electrically) conductive base material (NFe) (e.g. aluminium, copper, brass).
This method utilises the electrical conductivity of the base material. A coil generates a magnetic field, which induces an eddy current in the material. To determine the coating thickness, a sensor measures the counter-magnetic field caused by the eddy current, which becomes weaker as the thickness of the non-conductive layers increases.
